Thailand may be a more popular beach
destination than Vietnam. But with a 3260 kilometers of golden coastline
stretching from the China border up north to the southernmost point of the
country, Cape Ca Mau, Vietnam is still a great place for beach lovers, with
some sumptuous resorts and villas along the seashore and various exciting
outdoor activities available for all kinds of travelers. But the fun doesn’t
stop there. Take a boat and move farther away from the coastline, you will be
warmly welcome by some captivating islands that could be a highlight during
your Vietnam tour.
Cat Ba
Stretching over 260 km2 in the Gulf of Tonkin
with a total number of 366 islands, Cat Ba is a great choice of extension after
2 or 3 days cruising around the world famous Halong Bay which is not far away.
Cat Ba features a great biodiversity with the possession of 7 different natural
ecosystems, from limestone karsts, coral reef, mangrove to tropical forest,
lagoons, beaches and caves. Though may not be as fabulous as beaches in
Southern Vietnam, Cat Ba beach is ideal for outdoor activities such as
swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, beach volleyball, beach football,
camping and many other to be added in the near future.
Cu Lao Cham
Cu Lao Cham comprises of 8 small islands
located near the beach of Danang City. Like Cat Ba, this group of islands in
Central Vietnam offers lots of exciting beach activities which is great for a
full day getaway from after discovering the streets of Hoi An ancient town. At
night, you and your friends can gather around the camp fire and enjoy some
fresh seafood caught in day by the locals.
Con Dao
With frequent flights from Ho Chi Minh City,
Con Dao is now easily accessible by planes. And you will have the chance to
relax on one of the most serene beach destinations in Vietnam. Con Dao is an
archipelago, includes 16 mountains islands and islets in total. Con Dao
National Park holds great natural and biological value. It is the home of
several endangered species of animals and features 3 different ecosystems:
coral reefs, meadow grass and mangrove. Con Dao also houses what once was
called “hell on earth” in the Vietnam War, the notorious Con Dao Prison will
give you a glimpse on what once was called “Hell on Earth”. Unlike Cat Ba and
Cu Lao Cham, you can stay at Con Dao longer as there is an increasing number of
four and five star resorts catering in the islands, most notably Six Senses Con
Dao.
Phu Quoc
One of the very few islands in Gulf of Thailand
that belongs to Vietnam, Phu Quoc is the largest and perhaps the most famous
destination in the list for two things: beaches and seafood. This densely
forested islands offers one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the
country. In fact, it was voted as “The Cleanest and Most Beautiful Beach in the
World by ABC News in 2008. Choices of accommodation are abundant, but the best
one must be La Veranda Phu Quoc with a reminiscence of French colonial villas. With
its lazing beaches and magnificent landscapes, Phu Quoc is a perfect place for
a romantic honeymoon.
