The fairy tales, legends and human’s imagination and creativity from thousand years are considered the elite of the nation's spiritual life. They awaken in us the sentimental and are durable glue cementing the soul of many generations.

History has it that: Mount Nham Bien, also known as Neo mountain, ran from Co Dung Co Dung canton (Tien Dung commune today) to the village of Bai Xanh, Van Coc commune, Hoang Mai canton, Yen Dung district. Neo mountain has another name of “Cuu Thap Cuu Phong” (which means The mountain range with 99 peaks).

In the time of the creation of the world, there was a flock of Phoenix flying above to find the land to set up the imperial capital, and they chose this place. Unfortunately, the Phoenix flock consisted of 100 birds, but Nham Bien Mountain has only 99 tops, the each Phoenix perched on a top, the last one lack the alighting place, so it swung around then it flew away. After tat, the other Phoenixes in the flock found that their peer did not have a place to perch, so they flew after him. The flock of birds flew off to find another place; otherwise, Nham Bien would became the capital of our country.

In the 99 peaks of Nham Bien mountain range, the highest top is Chan Voi of 199m higher than sea level located in the territory Lieu De village, Ha Lieu commune, Phuc Tang canton, later in Phan Son canton (Dong Son commune nowadays), the second highest one is Mount Bui of 196m high, then Non Vua, Vanh Kieu mountains ...

The name of Non Vua Mountain is also rooted from a legend in the 13th century, when the Great Tutor Tran Thu Do picked up King Ly Chieu Hoang to this place to witness him decimating the monster snake. Since then, the mountain was named Non Vua (The King’s Mountain). Non Vua Peak has a wide flat ground with ponds, where is said to be the palace of the king. In the foothill with winding paths, luxuriant reed, there are Gieng Tien (Fairy Well), Ngoi Tien (Fairy Canal), Ao Tien (Fairy pond), filled with water all year round. Beside Ban Co Tien (Fairies’ chessboard), there is Suoi Tien with murmuring water creating melodious music.

Vanh Kieu mountain has the shape of the arm of the throne and is said to be the place where the Great Tutor chose put the palanquin to pick up the King. Cot Co (Flagpole) Mountain was the place that Mr. De Tham stationed during Yen The movement.

It is due to the legend of Phoenixes pursing atop the mountains that a mountain is also called Phoenix Mountain. This mountain brooks such Dam, Suoi Ran (Roc), Co Co… caves including Giau, Tram… and passes such as Tran Khi, Yen Ngua.... This mountain has many precious products, including grass, roots used to make very fragrant incense. There is a village named Huong Cao (village of aromatic grass) at the foot of the mountain. Coming here, we suddenly feel sublimate, awakening the childhood memory with the immature questions "Grandma, why our village is named Huong Cao, Cau Ke?". Old anecdote, old people, old stories, but the soul is at present.

We can not adorn the pages of legends a few dots, or add few other thrilling details to them. However, wallowing in such legends, the pride and the love for the spring up in our heart. Returning to the reality today, there are times when we are traveling on the country roads and seeing the mountains are bleeding by the damage of giant tractors, we feel melancholy.
